Verrazano 1st on AP's final Top 10 Derby list

NEW YORK (AP) ? Doug O'Neill is gearing up for a Kentucky Derby repeat.

A year after winning the Derby with I'll Have Another, the trainer is going for another ? this time with Goldencents.

The 3-year-old colt came through with a huge race in winning the Santa Anita Derby on April 6, and should be among the top contenders for the May 4 race.

O'Neill and his crew are feeling pretty good about their chances, especially after a recent workout in which Goldencents finally began to relax "big time.

"I saw a relaxed, mature horse that finished up great," O'Neill said after Goldencents worked four furlongs in 48.40 seconds at Santa Anita last week. One more workout on Thursday, and it's off to Louisville on Saturday.

I'll Have Another also won the Preakness, but was scratched and retired because of a tendon injury the day before attempting to win the Belmont Stakes and capture the Triple Crown.

Goldencents is No. 4 on the AP's final Run to the Roses' Top 10 list of Derby contenders, with Verrazano, Orb and Revolutionary holding their spots at 1-2-3, respectively.

Verrazano, one of as many as six Derby horses for trainer Todd Pletcher, had his first workout over Churchill Downs on Sunday, covering five furlongs in 1:00.20. Pletcher-trainee Revolutionary also worked, going four furlongs in 48.80.

Fountain of Youth and Florida Derby winner Orb worked five furlongs in 1:02.20 Sunday at Payson Park before departing for Louisville.

"This was the one we need to get behind us," trainer Shug McGaughey said. "What I liked to see was that he was very settled going to the track, warming up and coming home."

While O'Neill will be attempting to become the seventh trainer to win back-to-back Derbys (Bob Baffert was the most recent, with Silver Charm in 1997 and Real Quiet in '98), McGaughey will be saddling just his second Derby starter since his Easy Goer finished second to Sunday Silence in 1989.

"I'm really excited. I hope I stay excited and don't get nervous, but I know that's not going to happen," McGaughey said. "If everything goes right in the next 13 days, I'll really get excited about maybe having a chance to win."

The only changes in the top 10 saw Itsmyluckyday move up two spots to No. 7 and Mylute move into a tie at No. 10 with Will Take Charge.

Mylute finished second in the Louisiana Derby and has a new rider in Rosie Napravnik, the nation's fifth-leading jockey in earnings.

The 20-horse field will be chosen based on a new system of Derby qualifying points from designated races. Five of Pletcher's horses are in the top 20, with a sixth, Lexington Stakes winner Winning Cause, at No. 21.

Clinton, 'Normal' honored at GLAAD awards

(AP) ? NBC's sitcom "The New Normal," FX's thriller "American Horror Story: Asylum" and NBC's daytime drama "Days of Our Lives" took home top TV honors at the 24th annual GLAAD Media Awards held Saturday night in Los Angeles.

The GLAAD awards pay tribute to "inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives."

The event, hosted by actress-producer-director Drew Barrymore, boasted such Hollywood heavyweights as presenters Jennifer Lawrence, Charlize Theron, Betty White and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Other winners included "Perks of Being a Wallflower," which was named outstanding film: wide release, and former President Bill Clinton was given the first advocate for change award.

On the arrivals line, longtime Clinton friend, Oscar-winner Mary Steenburgen, defended the former president's controversial honor. Under Clinton's administration came the Defense of Marriage Act, which bars federal recognition of same-sex marriage, as well as the "don't ask, don't tell" military policy.

"Actually, ("don't ask, don't tell") was a sorrow for him," Steenburgen said. "So, I think he's spent a large part of his life making up for that. But I tell you this: He's never not had his heart in the right place, in terms of the gay community."

Many who walked the press gauntlet shared personal stories. Actor Justin Bartha said a brother's coming out moved him both personally and professionally.

"It was an inspiring moment ? I'm sure for him and definitely me and my whole family," Bartha noted. "So, it was at the forefront of my mind when looking at (the role of half of a gay couple in "The New Normal")."

"Kyle XY" actor Matt Dallas discussed his decision to come out publicly earlier this year. MSNBC news anchor Thomas Roberts talked about the recent marriage to his male partner of 12 years. Entertainment blogger Perez Hilton detailed the challenges of being the single gay parent of a newly adopted child.

And transgendered Chaz Bono expressed hopes for the gay lesbian bisexual transgender community's future.

"I mean, I think the goal always has to be equality in all aspects under the law," he said. "You're never going to eradicate discrimination. We see that with other minorities. Racism is still, unfortunately, alive and well. But equal protection under the law makes a huge difference. So, I think, for me, that is the goal, that is the thing to strive for."

Additional 2013 GLAAD Media Awards were presented in New York on March 16. The final awards will be presented in San Francisco on May 11.

Ouya Limited Edition units now fast tracked for shipping

Ouya

Ouya shows that they realize the value of communication, fills us in with another shipping update

Ouya wants to be the next big thing on console gaming. We've heard today that they now have 10,000 developers lined up, and since the end of March they have been busy shipping units out to Kickstarter backers. They realize that to be successful, they need to get units in the hands of people who want one, and more importantly, keep communicating with the folks waiting on their order.

They are doing that with weekly shipping updates on their Kickstarter page and via email, like the one they have sent out today. There's no real breaking news to tell, but the prove that they are listening to feedback and have adjusted a few things in their shipping workflow:

  • Limited Edition units have been "fast-tracked" and will be shipped out sooner, cutting nearly two weeks off the original time.
  • Standard orders are no longer prioritized over orders with extra controllers. The orders with spare controllers will start shipping early next week.
  • They are working on methods to get international orders out the door faster

Good news all around, and it's awesome to see a company let us know how things are going during the crazy process of shipping out tens of thousands of units. Well done, Ouya.

After major earthquake: A global murmur, then unusual silence

Apr. 19, 2013 ? In the global aftershock zone that followed the major April 2012 Indian Ocean earthquake, seismologists noticed an unusual pattern. The magnitude (M) 8.6 earthquake, a strike-slip event at intraoceanic tectonic plates, caused global seismic rates of M?4.5 to rise for several days, even at distances thousands of kilometers from the mainshock site. However, the rate of M?6.5 seismic activity subsequently dropped to zero for the next 95 days.

This period of quiet, without a large quake, has been a rare event in the past century. So why did this period of quiet occur?

In his research presentation, Fred Pollitz of the U.S. Geological Survey suggests that the Indian Ocean earthquake caused short-term dynamic stressing of a global faulting system. Across the planet, there are faults that are "close to failure" and ready to rupture. It may be, suggests Pollitz and his colleagues, that a large quake encourages short-term triggering of these close-to-failure faults but also relieves some of the stress that has built up along these faults. Large magnitude events would not occur until tectonic movement loads stress back on to the faults at the ready-to-fail levels they reached before the mainshock.

Using a statistical model of global seismicity, Pollitz and his colleagues show that a transient seismic perturbation of the size of the April 2012 global aftershock would inhibit rupture in 88 percent of their possible M?6.5 earthquake fault sources over the next 95 days, regardless of how close they were to failure beforehand.

Abortion clinic worker saw babies breathe

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Philadelphia prosecutors have rested after five weeks of evidence against an abortion provider charged with killing a patient and seven babies.

The move comes after a whistleblower said she saw more than 10 babies breathe before they were killed at Dr. Kermit Gosnell's clinic.

Witness Kareema Cross also said she saw three babies move limbs and a fourth make a sound.

But in defense questioning, she said she saw babies move after their necks had been cut. Prosecutors say Gosnell and his staff killed babies that way after they were born alive.

The defense argues that any movement seen was a post-mortem reflex.

Gosnell's lawyer will ask the judge Monday to dismiss the eight murder counts for lack of evidence.
