When it comes to the smartphone game, big numbers always sound better: 1.5GHz quad-core processors, 12MP camera sensors and 300+ dpi displays. But is bigger always better? According to one expert, these super-high resolution displays may be indistinguishable from displays with slightly lower resolutions when it comes to the human eye.?
HTC recently impressed the tech world with the HTC J, a smartphone with a 5-inch, 1080p display. To us, it sounded pretty sweet as we're all fans of smartphones that make it impossible for us to find any pixels when we're looking for them. But what about a 720p display at the same size? Would it make a difference?
Ars Technica asked an expert, Dr. Raymond Soneira, CEO of DisplayMate, whether most users will be able to tell. Dr. Soneira says that your average smartphone user wouldn't know the difference, and only a handful of people will even notice. That also applies to pictures and videos--you just won't be able to tell the difference unless you're desperately pixel-peeping and maybe squinting really hard.?
So, if the average user couldn't tell a 720p display from a 1080p display on a small, 5-inch handset, why bother? Aside from bragging rights and telling everyone you've accomplished some feat of engineering, well, maybe that's exactly it. When it comes to appeasing smartphone customers, numbers make a difference. It's GHz this and megapixels that, so saying you have a large, 5-inch display at 1080p resolution is going to be impressive.
But just because you can't tell the difference doesn't mean you should feel bad. It's undoubtedly going to be a razor-sharp display and possibly more than you can ask for when it comes to text, picture and video sharpness. However, you'll also know that bragging to your buddies about your 1080p phone might be fruitless since they won't be able to distinguish it from their year-old 720p handsets. Oh well!
