Exploring The Historical Sites Of Lloret De Mar

Situated on the north-eastern coast of Spain, there are few better places for a holiday soaking up the sun than Lloret de Mar. Barcelona, the large and vibrant city only 70 kilometres away, makes the seaside resort town very easy to get to from abroad. The area is considered to be one of the hottest destinations on the Costa Brava, and every year locals and tourists alike flock to the golden sands and beautiful blue waters of Lloret de Mar. Barcelonas nightlife is close enough to give visitors a chance to experience a night out in "big city style", but during the days, it's wonderful to stay put and explore the local area. With its rich history, if you are ready for a break from the beaches, there are plenty of places to explore, in and around the town. Be sure to check out the Sant Pere del Bosc chapel and the Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage.

Sant Pere del Bosc chapel

One of the most interesting historical aspects of the area are the churches, chapels and hermitages of Lloret de Mar. Barcelona provides a place to see the larger, more famous cathedrals, but when you are on your beachside holiday, be sure to visit the Sant Pere del Bosc chapel. Located just five kilometres out of the centre of the town, the Sant Pere del Bosc chapel originally dates back to the 10th century and was inhabited by Benedictines until 1694, when it was torched by the French. Within the next hundred years, the church was rebuilt in a Baroque style. Later, in 1860, the land and chapel were purchased by Count of Jaruco, who turned it into what is still one of the most impressive estates in the area.

Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage

Built in 1079, the Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage was the first Parish church of the town of Lloret de Mar. Barcelona has nothing like this charming Romanesque church situated a mere two and a half kilometres from the centre of the town. While in the region, be sure to make the short walk to the Nostra Senyora de Les Alegries hermitage and get a better idea of the legend; it tells that the sea once covered the entire plain and the church was built just outside of the waters edge. The hermitage itself was the towns main church until the year 1522, and it was built in a unique Romanesque style that was altered somewhat during the renovations after the Civil War. Inside are frescos by Calandria, and the bell tower is a unique and quirky feature with its architectural features that dont quite seem to work.
