Tornado hits fair in Spain, flood deaths reach 10

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) ? A tornado swept through a fairground in a Spanish town, knocking down a Ferris wheel and injuring 35 people, while the death toll from flooding in the same southern region of the country rose to 10, authorities said Saturday.

Friday's tornado damaged several rides and cut electricity in the temporary fair set up in the main square of Gandia, according to its town hall website. It said 15 of the injured were seriously hurt, all of whom were treated on site.

Local media reported the fair in Valencia province was closed to the public at the time of a thunderstorm and that all the injured were fair workers.

Just inland from the Mediterranean coastal town, five more victims of Friday's flash floods southwest of Gandia were found overnight. They included a middle-aged woman in the town of Lorca.

Last summer, Lorca was hit by Spain's deadliest earthquakes in more than 50 years, leaving nine dead.

A spokeswoman for the regional government of Andalucia told The Associated Press on Saturday that the heavy downpours and resulting high waters had claimed the lives of five people in the province of Murcia, three in Almeria and two in Malaga.

The spokesman, speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with government policy, said a 52-year-old British woman was missing in Almeria as well as one homeless man. Five people originally declared missing had been found alive.

Local media reported that hundreds of citizens had to be evacuated throughout the region.

The flooding disrupted high-speed train service between Madrid and Valencia, and various regional lines, while bridges and roads were also made impassible.

The heavy rains which started Friday morning were expected to continue throughout Saturday, with the front moving north toward Catalonia and the Balearic Islands.

New insights on control of pituitary hormone outside of brain has implications for breast cancer

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? The hormone prolactin is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and then travels via the bloodstream to cells throughout the body, where it exerts multiple reproductive and metabolic effects, most notably on the breast where it is the master regulator of lactation. In recent years researchers have found that prolactin is also produced by some tissues outside the brain, however little is known about the functions of extra-pituitary prolactin or how its production is regulated in these tissues.

Now, the laboratory of Lewis A. Chodosh, MD, PhD, chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, reports in Genes & Development that activation of the PI3K-Akt oncogenic signaling pathway in the mammary glands of mice rapidly induces cells in the breast itself to produce prolactin. This, in turn, triggers Stat5 activation, mammary epithelial differentiation and milk production in virgin mice within a matter of hours.

"Remarkably, these changes occur in the absence of any of the complex hormonal changes or developmental programs that normally accompany pregnancy" explains Chodosh.

Consistent with a physiological role for prolactin outside of the brain, the Penn team found that mice bearing mutant Akt genes fail to activate Stat5 or initiate lactation when they give birth due to an inability to synthesize and secrete prolactin in the mammary gland, despite normal levels of circulating prolactin in the blood.

These findings provide the first demonstration that the synthesis and secretion of mammary gland prolactin is regulated by PI3K-Akt signaling and identify a physiological function for extra-pituitary prolactin during a critical developmental stage that is essential for the survival of mammalian offspring.

What's more, prolactin has long been thought to play a role in human breast cancer, however this has typically been assumed to be due to circulating prolactin produced by the pituitary. Since the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway is commonly activated in human cancers, this new finding suggests the important possibility that prolactin produced by the breast itself may play a role in breast cancer. In fact, mammary prolactin has been detected in some human breast cancers. As such, investigators have proposed that prolactin produced by the mammary gland -- rather than by the pituitary -- may play a direct role in the development of breast cancer, for example by providing pro-growth or pro-survival signals to cancer cells in the breast. Accordingly, anti-cancer drugs aimed at blocking the effects of prolactin are currently under development.

"Since the PI3K-Akt pathway is one of the most commonly activated oncogenic pathways in human cancer, its identification as an upstream regulator of prolactin production in the mammary gland has intriguing potential implications for understanding the pathology of human breast cancer and as well as improving its treatment," notes Chodosh.

Out of 50,000 Windows 8 users, 53% prefers Windows 7

A large Windows 8 support forum has done a survey and asked ?more than 50,000 people about their opinion on Microsoft?s latest and upcoming OS. The forum is visited by many early adopters, users who like to try out new things. In this case this means people who were able to get Windows 8 before it?s official release (October 26th 2012) ?such as those who downloaded the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, ?MSDN, Technet and Dreamspark subscribers and, likely, also pirates who obtained a Windows 8 RTM copy.

The results aren?t?surprising?and pretty much match what people are stating in our Windows 8 forum too. While users like the easy?installation, ?fast boot and shutdown of Windows 8, they aren?t too happy about the Charms Bar and the Metro GUI in general. ?However most users are annoyed with the pricing of Windows 8. It?s the biggest thing to change, according to the forum users, about 35% of them say that Microsoft should lower it. During the release time ?Windows 8 can be obtained for $39.99, but that?s a promotional price, it is expected that afterwards the price will be much steeper.

The annoyance with the pricing scheme could be due to the fact that most users are not used to paying?separately?for an operating system.?Most computer users get the operating system with their computer, tablet or phone where the OS is pre-installed by the hardware vendor.?It?s probably disappointing for Microsoft?that less than 25% of the users like Metro, Skydrive and the new Windows 8 App store.

Even worse for Microsoft is that 53% of the users prefer Windows 7 and even 25% prefers Windows XP over Windows 8. ?Interested in more??Get all the numbers here.

FBI probes $7 flea market Renoir over theft report

Potomack Company via AP

This undated image provided by the Potomack Company shows French Impressionist Pierre-Auguste Renoir's "Paysage Bords de Seine," which was purchased for $7 at a flea market in West Virginia.

By NBC News staff and wire reports

The Renoir painting that caused a sensation when it was bought at a flea market for $7 may have been stolen from a museum six decades ago, and an auction house has put its sale on hold.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir's painting "Paysage Bords de Seine" was due to go to auction through the Potomack Company on Saturday, but its sale was put on hold after a Washington Post reporter discovered documents in the Baltimore Museum of Art's library showing it was on loan there from 1937 until 1951, when it was stolen.

The Impressionist work, whose title translates as "Landscape on the Banks of the Seine," was purchased two years ago at a West Virginia flea market.

The buyer, a Virginia woman who has not revealed her name, took it to auction house The Potomack Co. in July, and experts there confirmed it was by the French master Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The frame of the painting includes a "Renoir" plaque.

"I originally bought it for the frame," the buyer admitted to NBCWashington.com earlier this month. "I was trying to rip it apart... I was like, well, maybe I should wait." The buyer's mother encouraged her to get it appraised.

It was expected to fetch $75,000 to $100,000 at auction.?

"The rest of the auction will go on, but the Renoir has been withdrawn," said Lucie Holland, a spokeswoman for The Potomack Co.

Read the story on NBCWashington.com

Potomack said that the?London-based Art Loss Registry had said that the painting had never been reported stolen or missing and the FBI's art theft website did not list it as stolen either. There was also no police report from the theft.

The FBI is now investigating.

'Caught by surprise'
The Renoir came to the Baltimore museum through one of its leading benefactors, collector Saidie May. Her family?bought it from the Bernheim-Jeune gallery in Paris in 1926.

The Washington Post found records in the museum's library on Tuesday that showed May had lent the paintings and other works to the museum in 1937, Potomack said.

After the newspaper told it of the findings, the Baltimore museum checked its files and found a loan record showing the Renoir had been stolen on November 17, 1951. What happened to it after the theft is unknown.

Doreen Bolger, the museum director, said the museum's probe into what happened to the painting was in early stages.

May died in May 1951 and the art collection was willed to the museum. As its ownership was going through legal transfer, the painting was stolen while still listed as on loan.

?

The Mona Lisa Foundation, based in Switzerland, is claiming Leonardo da Vinci painted an earlier version of the Mona Lisa. Is she or isn't she? NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

"We were caught by surprise," Bolger said on Thursday.

"At this point we just want to make sure that the painting winds up where it belongs and that we provide all the information we can to law enforcement about this issue," Bolger said.?

She said that she would be happy to show the painting again if it is ultimately returned to the museum.

NBC News staff, Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

The Great Tokyo Rebound | Asian Real Estate Gets Greener

Post image for Friday Asia Digest: The Great Tokyo Rebound | Asian Real Estate Gets Greener

Two decades of deflation, following the great Japanese property bubble burst in the early nineties, have left speculative investors on the sidelines as far as Japan is concerned. The ultra-safe and highly regulated business environment, tax incentives for foreign investors, and even the promise of spectacular cash-flow, in a world gone mad with negatively geared sub-prime properties, have not been enough to lure those who seek capital growth back to the land of the rising sun ? until now.

Since the beginning of the year, and particularly in light of the recent European crisis, which seems to be headed nowhere fast, interest in Japanese property, and particularly in Tokyo office and commercial real-estate, is rising sharply ? helped significantly by the first signs of would-be recovery in twenty years, as dropping vacancy rates and minute rises in rents seem to suggest the trend is finally reversing. Temasek Holdings Pte. Ltd, a Singapore state-investment firm, have this week joined the ranks of big names such as Goldman Sachs, Angelo Gordon, and even trouble-stricken Aviva Investors ? which only last week reported it may close several of its international desks, fire a large number of employees, and possibly ditch its global REIT fund. All of the above have been actively purchasing office towers and commercial spaces in and around Tokyo?s hottest spots.

Spectacularly, Tokyo?s office space is outperforming Singapore and Hong-Kong, where rents have been dropping in the last 2-3 quarters. Japan?s government, which predicts it will break out of the deflationary cycle for the first time in twenty years, desperately needs the cash injection, as reconstruction efforts following the great 2011 earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear spillage are ending ? putting a damper on the expansion of the world?s third largest economy, which also happens to be home to the worlds largest trade deficit, and the worlds most swiftly aging population.

Getting Greener

While China, one of the world?s largest polluters, hasn?t quite seen the light yet, other nations around the continent are doing their best to introduce cleaner, greener technologies into their property building techniques, as two large exhibitions planned for next month portray. Build Eco Expo (BEX) Asia, to be held in Malaysia, and International Green Building Conference (IGBC) in Singapore will showcase the world?s most advanced ecological building technologies, initiatives and achievements from the past year.

With an impressive cadre of over 200 exhibitors from over 30 different countries around the globe, and a gallery of leading speakers in the green leadership and green community fields, the two expos are guaranteed to draw an ever increasing annual crowd. One of the participants, Shimuzu Corp., has claimed earlier this year that it believes its new Tokyo headquarters building omits less carbon dioxide per square meter than any other building in the world ? a bold claim which the company, which manufactures many of the technologies involved in achieving this aim, will seek to prove.

Global Gossip

* Asia-Pacific?s retail property market continues to solidify, as Jones Lang Lasalle reports that investments in retail real estate rose 22%, to 12.4 billion USD, in the first half of 2012. China and India top the Asian retail index, followed by Indonesia, Turkey and Vietnam. China in particular, is highly regarded as the world?s most prospering retail and shopping centre market, and has been so for some time.

* Vietnam, as well, has seen more of the international property investment limelight this week, as CBRE Group, 2011?s largest revenue yielding commercial real estate services firm, acquired its affiliate company in Vietnam for an undisclosed amount ? seeking to offer seamless integrated services in the country, which signifies south-east Asia?s increasing property investment potential.

* RREEF Real Estate, a unit of Deutsche Asset Management (Asia) Ltd, owned by the Deutsche Bank Group of Germany, has similarly been quoted this week as recommending investors to diversify their alternative investments, specifically including Asian real estate, to counter declines in traditional assets, such as bonds and stocks. RREEF, which holds app. 4.4 billion USD?s worth of Asian property assets, has issued a report earlier this year highly recommending investment in Japanese REITs (J-REITs) ? and have now added the main cities of Jakarta (Indonesia), Kuala-Lumpur (Malaysia) and Bangkok (Thailand) to their list of recommended property markets.

Committee to study finances for upgrades at Norris Recreation Center

ST. CHARLES ? With an estimated $4.5 million in improvements identified at the Norris Recreation Center ? plus work to be done to its racquetball courts ? leaders of St. Charles School District 303 and the recreation center agreed Thursday to form a committee that will examine the finances for such work.

Once the committee decides how much the school district and center can afford, the school board will decide how to proceed, Superintendent Don Schlomann said.

The committee will include citizens and members from the school board and rec board.

The process could take about six months, Schlomann said.

?From our end, there is no rush on this,? he said.

D-303 manages the Norris Recreation Center at 1050 Dunham Road, but the facility is supervised by its own board of directors.

The discovery of mold in the fitness center?s 1979 addition opened the door for the capital improvement discussions, Schlomann said.

Because the mold had the potential to affect other areas of the building ? which would affect students ? D-303 spent nearly $94,000 last month on mold abatement.

The affected racquetball courts remain closed.

In a joint meeting of the district?s Business Services Committee and the Norris Recreation Center Board, a representative from the architectural firm ATS&R presented options for the racquetball courts and a capital improvement plan for the athletic facility.

At $176,283, demolishing the racquetball courts and adjacent corridor would be the cheapest option.

Other options ranged between $409,811 and $444,114. In addition to eliminating water infiltration, they would either restore the three courts or convert the courts into fitness rooms.

About $4.5 million in improvements to the facility is also needed. Immediate needs total nearly $500,000; work that should be done in one to five years totals about $1.6 million; and long-range needs amount to about $2.3 million.

Calling the repairs and improvements a ?team effort,? recreation center Director Jon Monken said the center realizes it needs to financially contribute to the work.

School board member Kathy Hewell said she wants to know the use of the courts and data on enrollment.

?The center?s never been doing better,? recreation center board member John Collins said. ?The place has never looked better.?

Pet Insurance Agency Pets Best Insurance Names Dr. Tony Poutous ...

Pets Best Insurance, a leading U.S. pet insurance agency, announces Dr.Tony Poutous of Virginia Beach, Va. based Pet Care Veterinary Hospital as its second-quarter winner in the 2012 My Vet?s the Best contest.

Boise, Idaho? Dr. Tony Poutous has been selected as the most recent winner of the Pets Best Insurance My Vet?s the Best Contest, after receiving an endearing nomination from client Karen Calabro and receiving more than 3,000 clicks in an online vote amongst himself and five other nominated veterinarians from around the country.

The other finalists were Dr. Holly Brophy of Zion, Illinois, Dr. Irvin Ingram of Phoenix, Arizona, Dr. Richard Chu of San Francisco, California, Dr. Kathy Joseph of Vandalia, Ohio and Dr. Luminita Sarbu of Renton, Washington.

Karen Calabro?s nomination was selected because she said Dr. Poutous genuinely cares about all animals and he?s quick to trade in his free time to work with clients after hours.

?Dr. Poutous is the world?s greatest when it comes to compassion, knowledge, communication and genuine concern regarding all animals here on earth,? Calabro said. ?This man is an absolute treasure.?
Dr. Poutous said he was honored to win the title of ?best vet? and that just being nominated was an honor in itself.

?I really would like to thank all our clients for being so dedicated and to Karen for nominating me in the first place,? he said. ?I want to give my thanks and appreciation to the other doctors who were nominated as well.?

Dr. Poutous said he?s not sure exactly how he will use the $1,000 he?s won, but he thinks he has a pretty good idea.

?Our office does run an angel fund that we use to help defray the cost for pets that are in need,? he said. ?I suspect I will donate that money to the angel fund so that way it can be used to help the most animals and the most people.?

The pet health insurance agency first launched My Vet?s the Best in 2011 and expanded it in 2012 to include even larger prizes. The contest began on January 1, 2012 and continues throughout the year.

President and Founder Dr. Jack Stephens said Pets Best Insurance created the My Vet?s the Best contest to recognize stellar veterinarians across the nation who have exceeded their clients? expectations in every way possible.

?As a veterinarian, I know what it?s like to want to help an animal that can?t receive treatment because of the cost associated with veterinary care. That?s why this contest awards deserving veterinarians with $1,000 provide care for animals in need,? Dr. Stephens said.

Dr. Poutous said he thinks pet insurance can be very helpful because it can help clients afford veterinary care they might otherwise not be able to.

?It?s something you hope you don?t have to use, but I think it?s a very valuable tool,? Dr. Poutous said of pet insurance. ?When my clients ask me about it, I say it?s certainly worth looking into. It?s nice to have the security there? especially when animals get sick or when there?s an accident.?

Pet owners who think their veterinarians have gone above and beyond for their pet are asked to submit their nominations through a form on the Pets Best Insurance Facebook page and website. Each quarter, an internal panel selects six finalists from all received nominations. The six veterinarians and their client-submitted stories are then posted to Facebook for public voting.

Each quarter, the pet owner that has the story with the most votes will receive a $200 cash prize and the winning veterinarian will receive $1,000 for the treatment of animals in need. One grand prize winner will also be selected in 2013. The annual grand prize winner will receive airfare, hotel accommodations and registration for two to the 2013 Western Veterinary Conference, a leading continuing education conference for veterinarians. The 2012 My Vet?s the Best contest will recognize a total of four winning pet owners and their veterinarians throughout the year.

Researchers find risk markers for erectile dysfunction following radiation in prostate cancer

Thursday, September 27, 2012

In the first study of its kind, a research team led by Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University discovered 12 genetic markers associated with the development of erectile dysfunction (ED) in prostate cancer patients who were treated with radiation. The findings, published in the International Journal of Radiation Oncology? Biology? Physics, are an important step towards helping clinicians determine the best course of treatment for prostate cancer patients and may lead to the development of therapies that alleviate side effects.

The main treatments for prostate cancer ? surgery, brachytherapy (seed implants) and external beam radiation therapy ? are all very effective at curing prostate cancer. Unfortunately, each treatment places patients at risk for ED. According to the National Cancer Institute, the prevalence of erectile dysfunction following external beam radiation for prostate cancer ranges from 65 percent to 85 percent. The Prostate Cancer Foundation estimates prevalence of ED following seed therapy at 25 to 50 percent. Many men will be able to regain their potency with time and treatments, but doctors would like to identify which men may be more likely to develop this side effect.

In the first large scale Genome-Wide Association Study to identify single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with susceptibility for the development of erectile dysfunction following radiotherapy for prostate cancer, researchers conducted a two-part study, first, to discover the candidate genetic markers of side effect risk, and second, to confirm which of those markers are replicated in a second group of patients. In the first group of prostate cancer patients, which included 132 men who developed erectile dysfunction after radiotherapy and 103 men similarly treated who did not develop erectile dysfunction, they found a set of genetic markers associated with erectile dysfunction. In the second part of the study, which examined 128 patients who developed erectile dysfunction after radiotherapy and 102 who did not, researchers confirmed that 12 SNPs were associated with erectile dysfunction.

"Thankfully, current treatments for prostate cancer offer excellent rates of long-term survival, so patients and their physicians have a choice about which treatment path to take," said Barry Rosenstein, PhD, Professor of Radiation Oncology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine. "However, the risk of developing erectile dysfunction after radiation treatment is highly variable, suggesting there may be a genetic component to determining that risk. Our study confirms that specific markers make certain patients more susceptible to this side effect."

Patients in the study cohort were given one of three treatments: internal radiotherapy, known as brachytherapy; brachytherapy plus external beam radiation; or external beam radiation alone. They were followed for an average length of nearly four years to determine level of sexual function after treatment.

Interestingly, the 12 SNPs identified in this study were located near genes that seem to be related to erectile function rather than related to radiation response. The researchers conclude that these SNPs may affect genes that sensitize a patient to developing erectile dysfunction when exposed to radiation during therapy.

"Prostate cancer screening and treatment are undergoing major shifts," said Harry Ostrer, MD, Professor of Pathology and Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Director of Genetic and Genomic Testing at Montefiore Medical Center and co-principal investigator of the study. "This is part of our ongoing effort to identify men at highest risk for disease, identify the aggressive tumors that would be responsive to therapy, and to improve quality of life for men with indolent prostate cancers who might benefit from active surveillance, rather than therapy."

The authors indicate that examination of a large, independent cohort of similarly treated patients will be necessary to definitively determine which SNPs to include as part of a clinically useful predictive test to identify which men are at greatest risk for developing erectile dysfunction following prostate cancer radiotherapy. The researchers are also evaluating the impact of radiation treatment on urinary complications and proctitis, the inflammation of the rectum.

Why more Sherlocks? That's elementary, my dear Watson

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - How many times can Sherlock Holmes be reinvented?

At least once more, judging by the latest TV incarnation of the British detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle more than 120 years ago.

"Elementary," which debuts on CBS on Thursday, puts a modern twist on the classic tale by casting British actor Jonny Lee Miller as a recovering drug addict living in New York, and Lucy Liu as his rare - but far from first - female sidekick, Dr. Joan Watson.

The part-crime, part character-driven U.S. show follows hundreds of movies, TV series and books about, or inspired by, the eccentric amateur London detective with superb logical skills and his long-suffering friend.

In just the last few years, Holmes has spawned two hit movies with Robert Downey Jr. as a cheeky 19th-century action hero, and the BBC's award-winning modern day miniseries "Sherlock," starring Benedict Cumberbatch.

Holmes also inspired the character of brilliant but cantankerous diagnostician Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) in the TV medical series "House."

According to Guinness World Records, Sherlock Holmes is the most portrayed character in movie history, with his first screen appearance dating back to 1900.

"This guy has got about as identifiable a brand as you could ever ask for. Everyone knows immediately what he means, and what he stands for. It's like Superman, you could keep on remaking this for every new age," said Robert Thompson, professor of popular culture at Syracuse University.

"Many of the Sherlocks we have seen are far separated from the one Conan Doyle created. But you can still use that general skeletal framework, and then every five years or so you dress him up in a new set of clothes," Thompson told Reuters.

ADDICTED TO DRUGS AND PUZZLES

Rob Doherty, the creator of "Elementary" and a longtime fan of Conan Doyle, says he sees the fingerprints of Sherlock Holmes on almost every modern TV crime show.

Doherty's version focuses on Holmes as an addict - not just to the cocaine mentioned in the original books, but also to puzzle solving in general.

"I think in many senses, he has an addictive personality ... . The original Sherlock dabbled with cocaine, dabbled with opiates," Doherty told television journalists last month.

"Our Sherlock had those same problems but I think one of the big differences is that our Sherlock hit a serious wall," he said. "He has emerged with just a tiny kernel of self-doubt where one previously never existed."

Liu, who previously starred in the two movie versions of "Charlie's Angels," is hired to be the "sober companion" of Holmes and plays Watson as a disgraced former surgeon with her own flaws and mystery.

"She's just as unstable (as Holmes) but just not as obvious because she is trying to distract her own problems with his problems," Liu told reporters in August.

The actress is not the first woman to inhabit Watson. Margaret Colin, Debrah Farentino and Jenny O'Hara have played the Watson role in three separate TV movies since the 1970s.

"Elementary" is getting strong early reviews and popping up on lists of the best shows debuting on U.S. television in the next few weeks.

Tim Goodman with The Hollywood Reporter called it "one of the most promising dramas this fall season," while Washington Post TV critic Hank Stuever said it "exhibits enough stylish wit in its mood and look to quickly distinguish itself from the latest British 'Sherlock' series."

While strong brand identity can be an advantage, it can also work the other way.

"You already have more than a century of promotion of this name. Everyone knows you are talking about a great detective," said Thompson.

"But, as a 50-something male, when I hear Sherlock Holmes, I think of black-and-white movies and a guy in this British, crazy outfit, and it doesn't immediately make me want to go and see the new movie or the new TV show. It seems kind of fusty."

Bioengineers design rapid diagnostic tests inspired by nature

ScienceDaily (Sep. 27, 2012) ? By mimicking nature's own sensing mechanisms, bioengineers at UC Santa Barbara and University of Rome Tor Vergata have designed inexpensive medical diagnostic tests that take only a few minutes to perform. Their findings may aid efforts to build point-of-care devices for quick medical diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), allergies, autoimmune diseases, and a number of other diseases. The new technology could dramatically impact world health, according to the research team.

The rapid and easy-to-use diagnostic test consists of a nanometer-scale DNA "switch" that can quickly detect antibodies specific to a wide range of diseases. The research is described in an article published this month in the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

The design was created by the research group of Kevin W. Plaxco, a professor in UCSB's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. He noted that, despite the power of current diagnostic tests, a significant limitation is that they still require complex laboratory procedures. "Patients typically must wait for days or even weeks to receive the results of most STD tests," said Plaxco. "The blood sample has to be transported to the lab, its content analyzed by trained personnel, and the results sent back to the doctor's office. If we can move testing to the point of care, it eliminates the lag between testing and treatment, which would enhance the effectiveness of medical interventions, and, for infectious diseases like STDs, reduce transmission."

The key breakthrough underlying this new technology came from observing nature. "All creatures, from bacteria to humans, monitor their environments using amazing 'molecular nanoswitches' that signal the presence of a specific target by changing their structure," said Alexis Vall?e-B?lisle, a postdoctoral scholar and co-first author of the study. "For example, on the surface of our cells, there are millions of receptor proteins that detect various molecules by switching from an 'off state' to an 'on state.' The beauty of these switches is that they are able to work directly in very complex environments such as whole blood."

Plaxco's research group teamed with Francesco Ricci, professor at University of Rome Tor Vergata and co-first author of the paper, to build synthetic molecular switches that signal their state via a change in electric current. This change in current can be measured using inexpensive electronics similar to those in the home glucose test meter used by diabetics to check their blood sugar. Using these "nature-inspired" nanoswitches, the researchers were able to detect anti-HIV antibodies directly in whole blood in less than five minutes.

"A great advantage of these electrochemical nanoswitches is that their sensing principle can be generalized to many different targets, allowing us to build inexpensive devices that could detect dozens of disease markers in less than five minutes in the doctor's office or even at home," said Ricci.

The authors noted that it may take several years to bring the devices to the market.

The additional co-authors are Fan Xia of Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China; and Takanori Uzawa of Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Japan.

This work was funded by the National Institute of Health, the Fond Qu?b?cois de la Recherche sur la Nature et les Technologies; the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MIUR) project "Futuro in Ricerca;" and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, through the Grand Challenges Explorations Grant.

Why Twitter's Ad Sales Team Trumps Facebook - Business Insider

Doug, the ADD dog from Up!

Adam Kmiec, the global director of digital marketing and social media at the?Campbell Soup?Co., had some harsh words for Facebook's ad sales team at?Business Insider's?Social Media ROI Conference?today.

Kmiec said that as someone who's been in the ad space for years, he's "never seen anything as ADD as Facebook." Specifically: How Facebook interacts with brands and advertisers.

"Before they were public, you couldn't get Facebook on the phone," Kmiec explained.

Pre-IPO, Kmiec described an era in which communication and data was virtually non-existent. Facebook would launch sponsored stories, but it didn't provide any data.

"It's interesting what happens when you actually have to show your numbers," he continued. "Oh, we might actually have to have sales people."

Kmiec used Twitter's ad team as the counter to Facebook's, saying that they were aggressive and hired smart and communicative people from the beginning.

"The product was made to benefit people through the eyes of brands," Kmiec said. "If you ever want to be blown away, ask Twitter to show data on a social trend." It's fast.

Other panelists chimed in with positive experiences of using Twitter ads, too.

"We don't see the volume on Twitter that we do with Facebook sharing, but the ROI is higher," Kip Levin, EVP/Ecommerce at Ticketmaster, said. "Because of what we're seeing from organic sharing we think it will be a great advertising platform."

Chris Fralic,?a partner at First Round Capital, added, "Twitter has come on very strong with its ad product, especially with mobile."

Boost Mobile announces the LG Venice: a $220, 4.3-inch handset with Ice Cream Sandwich

Boost Mobile announces the LG Venice a $220, 43inch handset with Ice Cream Sandwich

It's only been a few days since we saw those leaked shots of what was rumored to be Boost Mobile's own variant of that Optimus L7 -- and, well, today the LG handset sees its official debut on the prepaid carrier. The LG Venice, as it'll be more commonly known around these parts, boasts a 4.3-inch, WVGA screen alongside a 1GHz CPU, a 5-megapixel camera on the rear (VGA quality on the front) and a video mode capable of shooting up to 720p recordings -- of course, this is all running LG's UI 3.0 flavor of Ice Cream Sandwich. As we've become accustomed to, Boost Mobile is pricing its new Android handset at a decent price ($220), with the device expected to start hitting "exclusive" shelves on October 10th and other "select" retail shops later the same month.

What draws you into a role play?

Greetings all,

I have been wondering this for a while, and I find that for myself if the name is interesting I will click on it but if the person didn't put any time or design into their initial ad for the role play itself I will click the exit button almost immediately. However if I click on a role play that has an interesting title and I see a ton of writing, use of coding, and pictures I will be more likely to read through the role play and see if it strikes my fancy. Granted zombie role plays I click out of as soon as I realize that's what it is because I dislike them but I mean on a whole what draws you as a role player into a role play and wanting to submit a character? Does the time put into the initial ad make a difference to you at all? Or does it not matter so long as a fairly decent plot has been typed up?

Element 113 at Last?

Japanese researchers claim success in creating a third atom of the element, after nine years of searching

RIKEN in Japan Is it in there? Researchers at RIKEN in Japan claim conclusive proof that they have created element 113. Image: RIKEN

By Richard Van Noorden of Nature magazine

After nine years of painstaking experiment, researchers in Japan reported yesterday that they have created a third atom of the element 113. That success, according to experts in the field, could see the element officially added to the periodic table. It would be the first artificial element to be discovered in East Asia, potentially giving the Japanese team the right to name it.

But that privilege is not assured. US and Russian researchers have also been hard at work on element 113, and say that they have created 56 atoms of it since 2003.

None of these sightings has been confirmed by the independent committee of experts appointed to rule on such matters. That shows how hard it is to prove the creation of new superheavy elements, although it also highlights the bureaucratic nature of the process set up to approve findings.

Quintillions of atoms
Since 2003, the Japanese team, led by Kosuke Morita, has been bombarding a bismuth target with a beam of zinc atoms at RIKEN?s Nishina Center for Accelerator-based Science in Saitama, near Tokyo. Their goal was to fuse the atomic nuclei of these elements to produce an atom with 113 protons and 165 neutrons in its nucleus.

This fusion is extremely unlikely. Over nine years, the beam has been switched on for a total of 553 days, during which time 130 quintillion (1.3 ? 1020) atoms of zinc have been fired at the bismuth target. Indeed, says Morita, the team knew that success would be unlikely from the start: they calculated that they would see only 3?6 successes in every 100 quintillion attempts.

The team had their hopes up early. By 2004, they had spotted what seemed to be an atom of element 113. But successful fusions cannot be observed directly. Jamming that many protons and neutrons together creates an unstable tumult of forces, and the atom falls apart within a few milliseconds. It decays, either splitting into two smaller portions (?fission?) or spitting out a series of small, charged particles ('?-decay') that are detected when they embed themselves in a surrounding silicon semiconductor. The timings and energies of these decay products hint at what the original material was, but they provide certainty only if the final decay product is one whose properties are already known.

In the first two of RIKEN's possible observations of the element, researchers recorded four ?-decays followed by a fission reaction, which they assumed came from an isotope of dubnium (element 105). But it wasn?t clear that the chain of ?-decays began with element 113. That, at least, was the conclusion of last year?s technical report from the body that pronounces on such matters, a group of experts drawn from the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) and the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP).

Rival schools
Nor were the technical experts satisfied with separate observations reported in 2004 by a team of scientists at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research in Dubna, Russia. That team used a different reaction, slamming calcium into a target of americium (element 95) to create element 115. When this element fell apart, decaying to a stable dubnium end product, it was thought to produce element 113 along the way.

The Dubna experiments ? which would have created different, more stable, isotopes of 113 ? had the advantage that their reaction, in theory, worked 300?500 times as often as the Japanese experiment, says Yuri Oganessian, who works at the Dubna facility. On the other hand, each of the isotopes in the decay chain was new and had never been studied before. The team would have to study the chemical properties of the final atom in the chain to prove that it was dubnium, and therefore that element 113 had existed fleetingly inside their experiment, in order to satisfy IUPAC and IUPAP.

Poor customer service is exactly what Brits deserve? | Business ...

So says leading customer feedback experts, Rapide, speaking out after receiving the shocking results of its latest research. Rapide has revealed that a staggering 91 per cent of people in the UK don?t always complain about bad service and yet 51 per cent don?t expect the service to improve if we don?t speak up.

The worst offenders in this nation of ?can?t be bothereds? are men. The boys win hands-down with a quarter of those who don?t always speak up saying it?s because they can?t be bothered to complain. And nearly half of us in the UK as a whole say we don?t try and pull businesses up by their boot strings as we feel there is no point ? businesses simply don?t care.

Rest assured we do still have a few grumpy Brits who are prepared to speak-up. You?ll find plenty of moaning coming from the South-East with results revealing 28 per cent of people here always or often complain. This compares to just 15 per cent ? less than one in six ? saying they often or always feedback after a poor service in both the East Midlands and Northern Ireland.

There is certainly a great British culture of non-complaining ? and more than half of those questioned agree that if we won?t speak up we?re getting the service we deserve. So what will persuade us to stop mumbling into our cuppas and start telling businesses what we think? An instant response, according to these recent revelations.

Nigel Shanahan, Managing Director at Rapide, says: ?The results are quite startling ? businesses are giving the impression they don?t care and consumers aren?t speaking up when there?s a problem ? resulting in a nation of people who think they receive poor customer service but won?t do a thing about it.

?Consumers want to know they have been heard and they want a response. We can all understand the frustration of sending a long winded email complaining to be completely ignored ? feeling like you?ve been listened to makes all the difference!?

The Face of Corporate Yoga, Fitness, and Wellness - Huffington Post

Today's fast-paced world is left behind for a quiet break every Monday and Wednesday afternoon from 1 to 1:30 p.m. at All Ages Dental Spa. Those are the days dedicated to yoga. Phones on service, doors locked, shades drawn, and lights off as gentle music wafts through the hallways for the peaceful siesta of restorative yoga. We stretch, breathe, and relax as I guide my students through a series of seated and standing modified postures tailored to target very specific areas of concern in the dental practice, mainly low back pain, shoulder pain, neck aches, and wrist cramps associated with repetitive movements required by their jobs and tasks. All is right in the world, as the students recharge for those 30 minutes. We end every practice with a quiet meditation and cleansing breath exercises designed for them to utilize throughout the day and even at home. They state that they always feel refreshed, invigorated, and more prepared to combat the rest of the busy day because of the time they took to nurture themselves with yoga.

This is just a snapshot of what a budget-friendly wellness program can bring to your everyday business environment. Affordable programs like yoga promote well-being in the workplace and provide tools for employees to combat stress. Initial costs of such a program are offset as they are found to statistically reduce employee turnover, promote employee alertness, increase productivity, and improve overall health.

A low budget, high-yielding wellness program is just the thing for small businesses. To start, make sure you have a provider who knows what they are doing. Looking for the perfect corporate yoga teacher means we have to put down the incense, and focus on the business sense. Your wellness provider should feel confident enough to be creative in modifying and adapting yoga postures and stretches to every BODY by understanding the anatomy, physiology, aches and pains, and needs of everyone from "industrial athletes" on their feet all day to "desk jockeys" in administration.

How do I find the perfect person? Do your homework and ask around. Personal testimonials from coworkers are a great place to start. Placing an ad on a fitness website gets initial attention as well. When you have applicants apply, ask to see samples of their work. Request references from previous or current employers to insure they have experience providing what you need. Have examples ready to show them of what you envision for your employees: physical standing movement, seated stretches, meditation, etc. If you do not know where to start, ask what they envision a plan having based on your requests. The more information you have for a wellness provider, the more they can tailor a program to exactly what you need. Interview as many people as it takes to find that perfect fit.

Having a wellness program like corporate yoga is something that sets you apart from your competitors. It can reduce work-associated injuries such as low back pain, and reduce work loss due to stress and illness. The bottom line is helping employees develop a healthy way to combat stress in the workplace; let them know how much they mean to the company by providing them with the break they need to be more productive at work and in life.
