Texas renewable energy advocates face tough season

Texas renewable energy advocates will have to defend critical policies this legislative session.

Renewable energy advocates are bracing this session to defend critical policies that have helped Texas become the leading wind-power state, the Texas Tribune reports.

The ascendancy of the Tea Party, an abundance of cheap natural gas and tighter budgets have reduced the sway of the wind industry, according to theTribune. Solar power advocates anticipate limited gains at best.

Texas? renewable energy push has ?been eclipsed by the effect of fracking,? according to State Rep. Mark Strama, D-Austin, referring to the drilling technology that prompted the natural gas boom.

Advocates? greatest hopes may center on programs being proposed at the Capitol to make it easier for businesses to install solar panels or to improve energy and water efficiency.

State Sen. John Carona, R-Dallas, has filed Senate Bill 385, which would enable Texas building owners to obtain private-sector financing for water conservation and energy-efficient improvements ? such as solar paneling ? through low-cost, long-term loans secured by property assessments.
