ST. CATHARINES ? St. Paul and Carlisle streets will be in the spotlight Monday as crews assemble to begin preliminary work on the new Downtown Performing Arts Centre.
?We?re eager to see workers back on site and initiate construction on our new Performing Arts Centre,? said Mayor Brian McMullan. ?This centre will change the face of our downtown landscape and once open, breathe new life into the heart of our city.?
Crews will begin by preparing the site for construction, including the installation of services, excavation and preparation of the building?s foundations, establishing a compound area and securing the site. The first major milestone will be erecting a crane to assist with moving materials around the site.
?What an exciting time for this community and the entire region,? says Steve Solski, Executive Director. ?I look forward to the day when we open the doors on this new legacy for the performing arts.?
City Council voted May 27 to award the tender to build the new facility to Bird Construction at a cost of $42 million.
The St. Catharines Performing Arts Centre will be a 95,000 sq. ft. facility comprised of four state-of-the-art performance venues capable of hosting a variety of entertainment options, including music, theatre, dance and film. Designed by Diamond + Schmitt Architects, this $60 million academic and cultural complex will annually host 600 events and bring 125,000 visitors downtown. The PAC will be located in the heart of Downtown St. Catharines, on the corner of Carlisle and St. Paul streets, adjacent to the new home of Brock University?s Marilyn I. Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts.
